Maidan Monitoring Information Center is a non-government, non-profit organization, established in 2000 to counter post-totalitarianism and to foster nonviolent civic resistance in Ukraine. In March 2022, Maidan pivoted to document the russian invasion. Maidan’s extensive documentation has formed the basis for numerous criminal proceedings conducted by law enforcement agencies and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. Maidan’s work has also been featured in several international exhibitions, including at the European Parliament in Brussels in August 2023.

Working closely with Ukrainian governmental institutions, Maidan documents evidence of russian war crimes in photos and videos as a part of pretrial criminal investigations.  Maidan’s extensive documentation has formed the basis for numerous criminal proceedings conducted by law enforcement agencies and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

Maidan examines the impact of the russian invasion on all aspects of Ukrainian society. Of special concern are its children. Their parents may be fighting on the front lines, their homes are shelled, their schools are bombed and their childhood is under unrelenting pressure and trauma. Some find dead soldiers in the trenches, some step on mines outside their village, an entire generation growing up under war time conditions.

Following inspection of the objects that have been targeted by russian attacks, Maidan categorized and classified them as follows: schools, preschools, educational institutions, hospitals, transport depots, public transport hubs and stations, public rail system, sports facilities and utility systems for water, gas, electricity and telecommunications. While not all inclusive, the list represents the entire infrastructure of the city and its civilian and public works.

The Maidan team deploys to areas which have been attacked by russian airstrikes or recently liberated from russian occupation. In the aftermath of the destruction, they are sometimes the first observers on the scene, before the blazes is put out or the area cleared for unexploded ordinance and other hazards.

All photos shown here were obtained by Maidan’s team of investigators, photographers, videographers and experts for investigative purposes. A majority of their documents, photos and videos remain unpublished security reasons.
